An approval workflow is a logical set of activities used to streamline data or tasks in an organization. The  business practice in which individuals must approve data or tasks at specific points in a process is also called as approval workflow.

Approval workflows can pause the process until a specified individual approves the data. Approvals are frequently given by managers or quality assurance (QA) executives depending on the process. An example of an approval workflow is an invoice approval workflow. A direct manager and a finance team member may be involved in this to ensure that the invoice reimbursement process completes smoothly.

The approval workflow varies significantly based on the scope of the project and the organization. There can be few or many processes and approval checkpoints as required. But at least one approval is required before something goes into production, goes live, or is otherwise considered complete.

An approval workflow helps businesses automate the most common tasks with the right workflow management tools. Approvers can review and give input on any particular task before an individual completes it by using an approval system.

Process workflow, Project workflow and Case workflow are types of approval workflows to choose from for businesses.
