BIMI or Brand indicators for message identification is a new email authentication protocol that facilitate brands to display their logos in the email inboxes of customers. The purpose of BIMI is to offer an extra layer of security and legitimacy to email communication, which can help to prevent phishing scams and enhance email overall user experiences of the recipients. Implementation of both SPF and DKIM email authentication protocols, along with a verified mark certificate (VMC) is required in BIMI.

Email encryption software is used by many organizations to further enhance the security of information traveling through email servers. BIMI is a strong open system that can distinguish between reliable and unreliable messages. It can also builds customer confidence, increases email engagement, provides additional security, and increases trust.

Improved brand recognition, authenticated email senders, greater control over brand representation, standardized format and improved email deliverability are some of the key features of BIMI.

Brand indicators are used by BIMI for domain owners, end users, and mail recipients. However, metadata in indicator headers, slow DNS queries, common gateway interface (CGI) scripts in the indicator payload, buffer overflows, and unsigned BIMI should be enforced to maintain security. The visual recognition of an email's sender can be enhanced by displaying the sender's logo in the email client's interface.
