Dashboards are generally a central feature of analytics platforms which are included in even less full-featured data visualization software products so that users can interact with to explore business data. The analytics software can be programmed to display metrics of the choice of user and multiple dashboards can be created that show analytics related to specific teams or initiatives.

Users can pick and choose their preferred metrics from predictive analytics of website traffic to customer conversion rates over a specified period of time to feature in dashboards and create as many dashboards as necessary. The permissions of different dashboards can be adjusted by administrators so they are accessible to the users in the company who need them the most. Users can also share certain dashboards on office monitors or take screengrabs of dashboards to save and share as needed. Users can explore dashboards on their mobile devices of some analytics platform products.

Dashboard software can be used by businesses to create dashboards to display data from a whole range of business units and data sources. Other tools with analytics capabilities such as sales analytics software, marketing analytics software, and product analytics software often also include dashboards.

Operational, Strategic and Analytical are three different types of dashboards.
